Superhome Movement – 10th Anniversary

The Superhome Movement was started with a simple but urgent goal: to raise the standard of housing in Aotearoa New Zealand. The reality is that our building code is not good enough. In fact, it's decades out of date, and it sets a legal minimum, not a standard for quality. And yet, many New Zealanders believe that “meeting code” means a home is healthy, warm, energy-efficient, and future-ready. We know that’s far from true.

After the earthquakes, Superhome co-founder and Trustee Bob Burnett and his family were ejected from their home. Forced to move into substandard rentals, they lived the reality that too many New Zealanders still face – cold, damp, under-insulated, and under-ventilated homes.

For the last 10 years the Superhome Movement has challenged the status quo. Raising awareness. Showing people – from homeowners to developers, designers, and policymakers – that there is a better way. That better design is possible. That better building is necessary. And that everyone has a role to play.

Through the Superhome Tours, education programmes, Super Design Guide, and partnerships across the sector, Superhome has demonstrated that we don’t have to accept the bare minimum. We can demand better and build a future that’s healthy, affordable, and regenerative.
