Design an energy efficient, sustainable home. Live in it for 3 - 5 years and prove or disprove the value of such an investment. Be sustainable.

Response

A 140sqm, three-bedroom, two-bathroom simple form that nods to living close to the beach and the simple forms of the surrounding dwellings, breaking down the formality of form, giving the design a relaxed feeling. First impressions are simple, understated and inviting. The garage was dispensed with and a storage pod and floating carport employed. Pass through the ‘hole in the wall’ entry and the home reveals it’s true identity. The main living areas have volume and yet are intimate. Living spaces open to a large deck with built in seating extending the summer living areas. Acoustic plywood ceilings are employed in the living areas, function and beauty. The media room is a response to changing family, it doubles as a fourth bedroom and at times an office. The main bathroom is part of the master bedroom suite.

Energy

Designed and built around active house principals; high levels of insulation, natural light and ventilation. Passive solar heating with small amounts of supplementary heating. Along the journey we added, fibreglass exterior joinery, passive solar reticulation, om solar venting, grey waste water recycling. Rainwater retention tanks. Photovoltaic panels. The result is that the house has required supplementary heating on six days this year.

Sea and sand

A contrast of dark and light colour palette, with added sea colours, natural timbers, charred weatherboard, simple plaster finishes. The landscape is sustainable, edible or native.
